MASS TIMBER CONSTRUCTION-TECHNICAL CASE STUDY

Is mass timber the building material of the future?

A new kind of construction with a not-so-new material is taking off in the U.S. Mass timber can replace steel and concrete in large buildings and proponents say it's greener and faster to build with. NewsHour Weekend Special Correspondent Megan Thompson recently visited the Ascent building in Milwaukee, a 25 story mass timber tower that will open next summer. -PBS.

Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) in Residential Construction

There is a massive interest at present by building professionals in Cross Laminated Timber (CLT), a new state-of-the-art engineered timber product. Whilst its recent take-up has predominately been in mid-rise commercial office buildings and apartments it is also a highly versatile, sustainable, renewable and thermally efficient building product for residential applications.

Wood Innovation and Design Centre (WIDC)

With a height of 29.5 metres, the Wood Innovation and Design Centre (WIDC) is the tallest contemporary wood building in North America. Located in the city of Prince George in northern British Columbia, the WIDC was conceived as a showcase for local wood products and as a demonstration of the province’s growing expertise in the design and construction of large wood buildings.

Brock Commons Tallwood House - UBC

Brock Commons Tallwood House was built in accordance with the British Columbia Building Code 2012 under the site-speci c regulation, UBC Tall Wood Building Regulation, which sets requirements for the building to meet or exceed the performance of a comparable non-combustible building.1 As part of the site-speci c regulation approval process, the overall design and modelling of the structure were peer reviewed by independent certi ed engineers and by an expert panel. This approval process helped establish the design parameters and ensured the incorporation of extra safety protection measures for the mass timber during the design, construction, and operation of the building.

virtual design and construction model

As part of Brock Commons’ design and preconstruction phase, a virtual design and construction (VDC) model of the building was created. This VDC model was a comprehensive 3D model composed of all the building elements, from the structure to interior  nishes to the mechanical and electrical systems.
